2. Which level is the minimum recommended for initial entry to a site with unknown hazards?

Answer: Level B. Level B is the minimum recommended for initial site entry until hazards are identified.

3. Level C may be used only when:

Answer: Contaminants and concentrations are known and APR criteria are met. Level C requires known contaminants, oxygen of at least 19.5%, concentrations below IDLH, and APR criteria met.

4. Which respirator is part of Level B?

Answer: Positive-pressure SCBA. Level B uses positive-pressure SCBA or supplied air with escape SCBA.

5. Level D protection is appropriate when:

Answer: There is no known atmospheric hazard. Level D is a work uniform for sites with no atmospheric hazard and only nuisance contamination.

6. Which level is used for an oxygen-deficient atmosphere where skin hazard is low?

Answer: Level B. Oxygen deficiency needs an atmosphere-supplying respirator; with low skin hazard, Level B fits.

7. Air-purifying respirators can be used in atmospheres that are IDLH.

Answer: False. False. Only SCBA or supplied air with escape SCBA is used at or above IDLH.

8. Why is heat stress a major concern in Level A and B?

Answer: Chemical-protective clothing traps body heat. Impermeable clothing prevents cooling by evaporation, so work-rest cycles and fluids are needed.

9. What is a PAPR?

Answer: Powered air-purifying respirator. A powered air-purifying respirator blows filtered air into the facepiece or hood. It is an air-purifying respirator, used in Level C.

10. What can trigger a change in PPE level during work?

Answer: Air monitoring results. Monitoring results, new site data and changes in tasks can raise or lower the level, according to the site plan action levels.
